String instruments: a timeless richness of sound

String instruments are an essential musical family, present in all musical cultures and styles, from classical to folk, including jazz, rock, and world music. Producing sound through the vibration of plucked, bowed, or struck strings, they offer a rich and expressive sound palette, suited to both gentle melodies and powerful harmonies.

There are three main categories of string instruments:

  • The bowed strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass) are played with a bow and provide harmonic depth and great expressiveness.
  • Plucked strings (guitar, harp, mandolin, oud) allow for varied sounds, ranging from folk to classical music and oriental traditions.
  • Struck strings (piano, cymbalum) use hammers or sticks to produce resonant, percussive sounds.

Each stringed instrument has a unique identity, influenced by its method of manufacture, the materials used and the playing techniques specific to each musical tradition.

Whether you're a beginner or a professional musician, string instruments offer unparalleled expressiveness and sonic diversity suited to all musical tastes. They are a fundamental pillar of music and continue to evolve with modern innovations and time-honored traditions.
