Discover our selection of Ney / Nay / Kawala / Gasba bamboo flutes , handcrafted for rich performance and traditional sound quality.

All our flutes are made of natural bamboo, with a mouthpiece of approximately 1.5 cm , slightly wider on the Gasba and the Persian Ney , which influences the way of blowing and the sound power.

Here is a simple comparison to understand their differences in manufacturing, playing and sound :

1. NEY ARAB

Suggested size: 64 cm (Do / C)

  • Origin : Middle East, North Africa
  • Game : Played vertically , slightly inclined, with a beveled mouthpiece
  • Structure : 6 holes on the front + 1 hole on the back for the thumb
  • Sound : Expressive, vibrant, capable of glissandos and subtle modulations (microtones)
  • Special feature : Possibility of producing two sounds at the octave thanks to the inclination of the breath

Ideal for classical Arabic, Sufi, or even oriental jazz music.

2. PERSIAN NEY

Sizes available: 65 cm (C) and 50 cm (E)

  • Origin : Iran
  • Game : Played diagonally , tip placed at the corner of the lips
  • Structure : 6 holes in front + 1 hole in back, like the Arab ney
  • Sound : More muted, softer, very introspective
  • Special feature : Requires very fine breath and good control of the embouchure

Perfect for Persian classical music and meditative solos.

3. KAWALA

Sizes available: 34 cm (SI / B) and 30 cm (Do / C)

  • Origin : Egypt and Turkey
  • Game : Played vertically , like the ney, but without a thumb hole
  • Structure : 6 front holes, no rear holes
  • Sound : More direct, clear, expressive
  • Special feature : More accessible for beginners, intuitive playing, popular sound

Used in popular Egyptian music, stories, traditional festivals.

4. GASBA

Sizes available: 62 cm (C#) and 59 cm (D)

  • Origin : Kabylie (Algeria)
  • Game : Played diagonally , very powerful blow
  • Structure : 7 front holes, no rear hole, wide mouthpiece
  • Sound : Rough, vibrant, very expressive
  • Special feature : Requires strong and continuous breathing, trance flute and oral tradition

Ideal for traditional improvisations and powerful, raw sounds.

5. DJOUWAK of Constantine

Suggested size: 26 cm (Eb / Eb)

  • Origin : Eastern Algeria (Constantine)
  • Game : Vertical, small format, very impactful
  • Structure : Small holes, direct breath
  • Sound : High-pitched, nasal, typical of Sufi music and religious ceremonies
  • Special feature : Rare, little broadcast, strong sound identity

Character flute, often used in rituals or as a sound ornament.

MOUTHWORD & TECHNIQUE

All these flutes require precise and controlled breathing . The mouthpiece is placed vertically or at an angle depending on the model, creating a fine stream of air directed against the bevel. Learning may seem difficult at first, but regular practice allows the full richness of the timbre to be revealed. Each instrument reacts differently to breathing: the more you control it, the more the flute reveals its nuances.
